About this metric

Definition

How much of a miner's income comes from fees rather than from new coins. The subsidy halves on a schedule and fees do not, so this is the ratio people watch when they ask what pays for mining once the subsidy is small. It has been volatile rather than trending: 6.5% across both 2023 and 2024, 1.03% in 2025, 0.63% so far in 2026.

How it is measured

Fees over subsidy plus fees, per block. The subsidy schedule is fixed and the fee side is not, so this does not rise with each halving: it was 6.5% across both 2023 and 2024, then fell to 1.03% in 2025 and 0.63% in 2026. Nor is the usual level a few per cent: more than half of all blocks are under 1%, and the median block in recent months is around a half of one per cent. The record is 93.2%, in a block that collected far more in fees than it was paid to produce.
